The flu is caused by a viral infection while pneumonia can be caused by either a bacterial infection or viral infection.

Influenza is spread easily from person to person usually when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Both the common cold and flu can trigger pneumonia and is a bit more serious. This is compared to 278 deaths listed for flu and pneumonia - however this was mentioned on 1203 death certificates.
